Tuesday, February 5 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Santa Fe College Fine Arts Building lobby Sustainable Santa Fe and the Democracy Commitment are co-sponsoring a panel discussion on the history and politics of Cabot/Koppers Superfund site in Gainesville. The 140-acre site in the Stephen Foster neighborhood was the location of the Cabot Carbon Corporation from 1945-1965 and the Koppers Corporation from 1916-2009. Poor waste handling by both of these industries and poor environmental regulation by government agencies resulted in contaminated soil, groundwater and off-site surface water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the remediation of at least part of the contaminated area will cost an estimated $90 million.
