Commissioner:
Thank you for having attended the Cabot-Koppers Superfund site consent decree hearing last evening.
With the threats to human and animal life and health of the extremely powerful toxins on, under and beyond the site and with the threats to the water supply of our state, the lastingly safe remediation of the former Cabot-Koppers Superfund site is in my opinion the highest priority issue for our city and to you and your family.
Please continue for as long as necessary--including beyond your term in office--to push our federal government and the responsible parties for the complete and safe remediation of the site and the making whole of the parties injured by the contamination, our fellow citizens.
Please also institute enhancements to the hazardous waste collection system and the environmental regulatory activities of our city to prevent continued pollution of our ground water from the leachates from landfills in which the solid waste contractor for our city dumps our solid waste. Gainesville needs:
Please also continue to lobby our federal legislators to support legislation that would impose taxes on the businesses of the chemical industry to provide the flow of money to the Superfund Trust Fund sufficient to provide the resources to remediate all of the current and future Superfund sites in our country as the original CERCLA Act of 1980 intended.
The poisoning of our environments and our citizens is not a pro-business or anti-business issue. It is is a responsible business issue. It is literally a life-and-death issue.
With concerned and engaged citizens throughout our country, do not allow the businesses of the chemical industry continue to "externalize costs" associated with safe and responsible operations of their businesses to our governments and to our citizens unchallenged.
Very Sincerely,
Mark Venzke
candidate
Gainesville mayor

Please also institute enhancements to the hazardous waste collection system and the environmental regulatory activities of our city to prevent continued pollution of our ground water from the leachates from landfills in which the solid waste contractor for our city dumps our solid waste. Gainesville needs:
- several, strategically located hazardous waste collection sites
- an ongoing social marketing campaign to encourage citizens to recognize and properly dispose of hazardous wastes
- vigilant regulatory inspections of facilities that produce, handle or store hazardous wastes
